Overview | CREST Training Programme

As the Bridge Resource or Marine Resource Management concept approaches the end of its second decade, ASSM’s consultants have successfully employed their combined 100 years of experience in airline safety management to push this concept forward towards the next generation of development and implementation.

assm.bizDespite nearly 20 years of BRM/MRM, an unacceptably high number of marine casualties are still occurring as a result of deficient human factor or non-technical skills amongst the navigational team. ASSM’s experience in training modern merchant fleet officers visibly illustrates the fact that whereas the crews may have learned what to do, they have little practice and experience in how to put their acquired human element skills into practice.

assm.bizIn order to address this perceived weakness, ASSM has combined a number of acclaimed airline training techniques into the creation of its “CREST” (Crew Resource and Environmental Safety Training) model in order to provide the ideal training environment for deck officers of all ranks and levels of experience. This uses well-proven human factors training methods developed within the airline industry during the same period – interpersonal skills training in an interactive real-time environment with qualified facilitators. During 2010, this model will also be extended to Engineering Officers.

Results to date confirm that CREST has most effectively adapted these methodologies to the marine industry and is having the desired motivational effect on the officer participants. Participant feedback indicates a profound interest in the material provided and acclaim for the means by which it is presented and taught; assm.bizthere is also an openly expressed want to extend and expand the training experience. This training method is proving to be a most beneficial and cost effective add-on to a client’s current technical training programme.

Marine accident investigation has also been further advanced by introducing this growing range of mature, well-proven aviation safety techniques not only into operational analysis but also pro-actively into crew training so as to prevent recurrences through raising crew member safety and risk awareness.

assm.bizIn order to supplement this, ASSM’s associated Forensic Visuals team can produce accurate marine performance reconstructions based on shipboard digital VDR, GPS and environmental data. These reconstructions are not only very effective aids in claims settlement and litigation resolution, but will serve as an invaluable training tool in a proactive safety management programme thereby assisting greatly in reducing losses and high-cost marine claims.
