Utilities
ASSM’s Utility services
include: conducting forensic root cause analyses of major power
generation, transmission and distribution systems accidents; analysing
equipment failures and performance problems; providing improved
equipment reliability recommendations; assessing the condition
of existing equipment for due diligence services, and to evaluate
repair/replace options; addressing prudence issues related to rate
base and regulatory hearings; and acting as a spokesperson for
the utility in press conferences, public and government meetings,
and in courts of law.
Our utility team includes experts in the
areas of boiler systems; cables; electrical faults; explosion analysis;
fire modelling; fire protection; generators; materials and mechanical
systems; nuclear; substations; toxic substances; transformers;
transmission and distribution systems; and turbines.
ASSM’s
associated Forensic Visuals team can produce accurate utility installation
performance reconstructions based on high-speed fault recorders
and protective relay sequence digital recorders and environmental
data. These reconstructions will serve as an invaluable training
tool in a proactive safety management programme thereby assisting
greatly in reducing losses and high-cost utility claims.
On the
pro-active side, similar to our marine work, the long proven successful “crew
resource management” concept that has evolved in aviation
for over 20 years, has now been successfully adapted by our principal
consultant, Captain Matti Sorsa, into a most practical and highly
effective “Control Room Resource Management” programme
for the modern nuclear or conventional power station operating
environment. The most modern concepts and methods available today
are currently being introduced to and practised within a number
of State organisations with impressively convincing results.
